In Kypseli,\nat number 17A<\/sup> of I.Drosopoulou street (within walking distance of St\nGeorge square), the Greek Printmakers\u2019 Association is launching the opening of\na new art space under the name \u00ab<\/strong>\u0395\u03ba\u03c4\u03cc\u03c2<\/strong>\u00bb<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Greek Printmakers\nAssociation is a group of artists that is successfully active in the domain of Greek\nand international cultural events since 1987. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The space aspires\nto become a point of encounter, research and promotion of Contemporary\nPrintmaking creation. The Greek Printmakers Association addresses a call to all\npeople, to participate in its initiatives which involve exhibitions, workshops\nand presentations with epicentre the Art of Printmaking <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The space launches its official opening on Thursday, March 5 at 19:00,<\/strong> with the solo exhibition of Efstratia Machairidi<\/strong> titled PUNCTUM<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0395fstratia Machairidi (\u0395.\u039c) is a visual artist\nbased in Athens. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She was born in Athens in October of 1983 and\nwas raised in Rhodos. She holds a Degree in Civil Engineering from Aristotle\nUniversity of Thessaloniki (2007) and an MSc in Structural Steel Design\n(Imperial College, London, 2008).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 In\nDecember 2014 she successfully entered the Fine Arts School of Athens from\nwhere she graduated in June of 2019 from A\u2019 Printmaking Studio of ASFA, under\nprofessor Yannis Gourzis. Her studies involve classic printmaking techniques:\nintaglio (drypoint, mezzotint, aquatint, etc) as well as relief (woodcut,\nwoodblock). For two years she attended the Scenography studio of ASFA, under\nProfessor Lily Pezanou, building up a creative bond between her two fields of\nstudies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She has participated in group exhibitions,\nfestivals and creative initiatives in Greece and abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since March 2019 she is employed as a painter\nof stage design, in the Structural department of the Greek National Opera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nartist states for her work:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00abUtilising\nas means of expression printmaking and the dynamics of personal expression, I\npursue the provocation of thoughts; the stimulation of emotions and the\nconfrontation with another internal dimension of the phenomena, having always\nas a core and a starting point, the drawing.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The images become\nreferences to another “world“, the one of dreams and rituals where the\n“heroes“ appear to strangely transform like actors on the stage of an ancient\ndrama.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nmanner in which the drawing is transferred, “translated“ to each material,\nconsists of dense linear cuts and spots. The density and overlap of these\nelements is exactly the one responsible for the building up of the tonicity and\nfor the composition of the image.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\nis in latin a word for this wound, this cut, for this mark that is provoked by\na sharp object, the word <\/em>punctum<\/em><\/strong>. This is even more appropriate to describe the\nprocedure I follow for the depiction of figures, since it refers to the very\nidea of punctuation and since the images for which I wish to “speak“ appear\ntruly punctuated by these sensitive marks. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore, I choose the word <\/em>punctum<\/em><\/strong>, in order to describe the very essence of these images, which is no other than punctuation marks of personal expression.<\/em> <\/em><\/strong>\u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n
