
The Lalit Kala Akademi, keeping in mind the passion and the intimacy of print as a Visual Art medium has launched its 1st International Print Biennale to discover new artistic trends in printmaking Nationally & Internationally. Lalit Kala Akademi, National Academy of Art, New Delhi was set up by the Government of India as an autonomous body, on 5th August 1954. The Akademi was given statutory authority in 1957, under the Societies Registration Act 1860. Since its establishment it has been serving the entire country by promoting the creative endeavors of Indian artists and bringing their arts to bear upon a large number of people, thereby playing an important role in defining and redefining, the sensibility of an entire culture, falling under the visual arts spectrum. Pivotal to the Lalit Kala Akademi’s mission is the encouragement of an ever-deeper understanding and enjoyment of modern and contemporary art before diverse local, national and international audiences.
The 1st International Print Biennale has been scheduled for the month of March and April 2018, in the Lalit Kala Akademi and NGMA galleries, it will be a one of a kind event where artists from all over the world will be able to send in their works and showcase on an international platform. Further there are five Grande prizes of INR two lakh each. There will also be honourable mentions for a selected meritorious works. The Akademi will also have a five days workshop of the awarded artists so that young and upcoming printmakers can see them in action and also be inspired with their techniques.According to the Administrator LKA Sh. C. S. Krishna Setty “Compared to other genres and mediums, over the years, practice of printmaking is decreasing among artists, especially in art colleges. This apart with the recent collapse of art market many printmakers are taking refuge in other mediums for their survival. To arrest this situation, we need to boost this medium with international exposure. Moreover with the advancement of new technologies, this medium has taken new dimensions all over the world, which needs to be showcased to the art fraternity and to the connoisseurs as well. In view of this, the said print biennale, will be a big platform to enthuse and encourage aspiring and as well as practicing fake rolex watches printmakers of this country. And also this will be a great occasion to showcase Indian talents to the participating other countries.”The Akademi will also invite few senior and veteran artists for the exhibition under the invited section. Ms. Anupam Sud a senior and internationally known Delhi based Printmaker has been given the responsibility of the Commissioner of the exhibition this year and the Steering Committee members are well known Printmakers like Ananda Moy Banerji, Dattatraya Apte, R.S.Sham Sunder, Paula Sen Gupta and Vijay Bagodi under the chairmanship of C. S Krishna Setty the Administrator of the Akademi.
