The ATHENS PRINTMAKING ART CENTER – PANDOLFINI & SIATERLI C.N.P.P. invites you to the printmaking exhibition “Archive in Motion: Contemporary approaches of a historical trajectory” with the works of Antigoni Valery, Elena Provata, Eri Agriou and Valentini Mavrodoglou curated by Elli Leventaki, at the ETCH INK art space. Four young printmakers are inspired by the rich historical archive of engravings and prints of the Athens Printmaking Art Center (APAC), introducing a new dialogue between past and present practices, while proposing alternative ways of seeing, approaching, and displaying the archive.
Throughout the years, the Athens Printmaking Art Center – Pandolfini & Siaterli has actively promoted the language of printmaking in the contemporary art scene of Greece and has acquired a rich collection of prints by important artists who have collaborated with the studio. This collection, a living archive of the historic trajectory of the Centre, is constantly being enriched with new works and is currently being digitized, with the aim of becoming an open and accessible source of knowledge to a wide audience.
In the exhibition “Archive in Motion”, four young female artists-printmakers, took as a reference point of their artistic research the work of an equal number of renowned Greek printmakers who have collaborated with the Athens Printmaking Art Center, that is Tonia Nikolaidi, Opy Zouni, Lambros Orfanos and Vasso Katraki. The outcome of their research reinforces a multilayered discourse that explores and proposes alternative ways of archive management, as well as new perceptions of the past through contemporary artistic printmaking practices.
As the curator of the exhibition notes: “Starting from the development of the Historical Archive as a need, followed the intention of its artistic exploration, which led to the realization of the present exhibition. The Archive in Motion presents the work of five printmakers from Greece, who approached the life and work of an equal number of visual artists through the archival material of the APAC. Utilizing the non-hierarchical spatiality of the archive as a rare capacity in today’s reality, participants were invited to conduct artistic research, in order to make historical information visible in the present, as contemporary printmaking proposals. The exhibition summarizes self-documentation elements of the respective research processes, which are presented alongside the final artworks, looking to interconnect the source material with the artistic result and initiate an open dialogue between past and present.”
Participating artists: Eri Agriou, Antigone Valery, Elena Provata, Valentini Mavrodoglou
Curation: Elli Leventaki
The exhibition “Archive in Motion” is realized under the auspices and the financial support of the Greek Ministry of Culture and Sports.
